Hutchings' Tourist's Guide to the Yo Semite Valley and the Big Tree Groves for 1877
San Francisco: A. Roman & Co., 1877. Hutchings, J.M. Hardcover. We are pleased to offer this very scarce guide to beloved Yosemite Valley. James Mason Hutchings was an early visitor to Yosemite and fell in love with its beauty; he operated a series of hotels and restaurants in the valley and also managed a tourist agency in San Francisco which arranged for transportation and guide services. Description: Dark brown cloth over boards, title in gilt to front board, blind debossed borders to front and rear board, 16mo, measures 6 1/2" by 4 3/4"; pagination: [ii], [ii] map, [3] 4-102. Our copy has a four page ad for The Baldwin Hotel tipped in. The Baldwin was built in 1876 and was destroyed by fire in 1898, it was quite luxurious for the day. Our copy also has an ad for the Hutchings Tourist Agency tipped in, it is on lavender colored paper. Citation: Currey & Kruska #173, Kruska (Hutchings) #93. This book was deaccessioned from The Contra Costa Library. Overall very good. This volume is ex-library and has several stamps, it has been professionally rebacked, has had both hinges repaired and has new endpapers. The corners, edges and boards are clean and free of wear, there was no restoration work, the interior is quite clean save the stamps, slight 1/2" dampstain to margin of title page.
