San Francisco: Pacific Buffet, Pacific Building, 1908. 3rd Edition. Soft cover. One of America's truly great cocktail books, the author was so well thought of, he was elected to the California State Assembly. (The book is dedicated to "The Liquor Dealers of San rancisco, who unanimously assisted in my election to the legislature by an unprecedented majority"). The introduction mentions that it was first published in 1891 and that the plates were destroyed in the great earthquake and fire which destroyed much of San Francisco in 1906. This copy in a variant wrapper, other copies noted as having a 1908 date on front wrapper. Softbound in wrappers, 1-139, i ad, i-xii . 8vo. Condition: Poor, significant yellowing tape to front and rear wrap and spine, 1/2" tear to reap wrap, entire book has been exposed to moisture, but quite serviceable and complete. Drinks were set down on the book, and probably spilled on it. Amerine 429. Boothby notes that the revised edition "was submitted to many first-class bartenders, successful saloon-keepers, famous connoisseurs and well-known clubmen from all parts of the globe for their approval and endorsement, one and all of whom have unhesitatingly declared it to be "The Dope"."
