"Ah Sin" A Dramatic Work

San Francisco: The Book Club of California, 1961. Limited Edition. Hardcover. An edition of the unsuccessful collaboration between Harte and Twain, drawing upon the then recently rediscovered "amanuensis copy apparently prepared for the early rehearsals of the play", still the only text known. Frederick Anderson provides an introduction, noting that "while Ah Sin is not the poorest work by either man, it is not far from it", neither writer being experienced dramatists when they attempted to capitalize on the popularity of Harte's poem "Plain Language from Truthful James" or "The Heathen Chinee". "This book has been designed, decorated with woodcuts and printed in an edition of four hundred and fifty copies at Fairfax, California by Vivien and Mallette Dean. The lithograph reproductions are by Charles R. Wood & Associates. The binding has been executed by Perry G. Davis." Faded spine, with slight damage to paper label. Foxing to top edge and untrimmed fore edge. Slight slant to text block. xvii, [1], 90, [2]pp. Good. Item #2026-S111
