California Vaquero / Lore of the California Vaquero
Fresno, California: Academy Library Guild, 1953. 1st Edition. Hardcover. First editions of A.R. Rojas's collections of stories of the California Vaqueros, published in 1953 and 1958. Wear to the edges of the illustrated dust jackets, with a loss in the center of the jacket of the second volume. Prior owner's name and address neatly written on a fly leaf in both volumes. From Rojas's dedication: "This book is affectionally dedicated to those Don Quijotes who in yesteryear rode the ranges of Kern County carrying a long rope instead of a lance and wearing a ten gallon hat in place of the Mambrinos helmet. They upheld the vaquero tradition with the tenacity, he of the Sorrowful Figure, that of the knight errant, looking back over the bottomless canon of the years I see much of Don Quixote and naught of Sancho Panza in the range rider of long ago." Very Good / Good. Item #2025-R197
