John DeMille's novel satirizes the grand tour, and its humorous depiction of Americans abroad was linked by one contemporary reviewer to Twain's 'Innocents Abroad', published the same year.Text in columns with one hundred illustrations promised on the title page. Worn cloth covers, with the cloth splitting along the front joint. Brown endpapers with starting front hinge. Foxing throughout. Cecil B DeMille's bookplate on the verso of the free endpaper, with the bookplate of an earlier owner on the fixed endpaper (Charles W. Gordon), and a pencil inscription on the flyleaf facing DeMille's bookplate ("Charley, from Aunt Mollie, Christmas 1870, 15 years old).
