Adventure in Viet-Nam: The Story of Operation Brotherhood 1954-1957

Manila: Operation Brotherhood International, 1974. Hardcover. The definitive history of 'Operation Brotherhood', the Filipino humanitarian project to provide medical care for refugees in Vietnam. From Carlos P. Romulo's foreword: 'It is a meticulously detailed history, and it is not likely to be superseded. As Father Bernad tells the story, it acquries the accent of the inspirational, except that it happens to be true. The concept was bon in the mind of a young architect, Oscar J. Arellano, who had for a long time pondered the problem of how Asians can aid one another in times of distress. The fall of Dienbienphu in 1954 was followed by one of the most massive human migrations in history, a migration not to be duplicated until the recent civil war in Pakistan. The problem of caring for the refugees with its inevitable complement of disease, starvation and misery, was evidently beyond slender capacities of what is now the government of South Vietnam, then reeling from the cruel devastation of war.' Drawing on archival sources and interviews, the historian and priest Miguel Bernad offers a detailed history of the origins of the organization, its growth into a global project, and the achievements and sacrifices of the Filipino medical teams. Printed and published in Manila in 1974, with 80 pages of photographs. The jacket shows considerable wear, including loss to the head and tail of the spine as well as the shadow of a damp stain to the lower edge (this is also visible in the lower margin of a small number of pages, not effecting the text). The sturdy red covers have wear to the head and tail of the spine.[i]-xiii, [1]-561pp. 10 x 7.5". As a heavy book this order may require additional charges for shipping. Very Good / Good.
