The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit

Chapman and Hall, 1844. 1st Edition. Hardcover. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit was published in monthly installments 1842-1844 following the popularity of Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickelby. In this novel, the character Martin Chuzzlewit travels to America, where Dickens takes the opportunity to satirically portray Americans as selfish self-promoters. Supposedly, this negativity was inspired by Dickens' own trip to America in 1842.
