After the success of Edward Caswall's anonymously published Sketches of Young Ladies, Dickens published a follow-up Sketches of Young Gentleman, and then this volume, which satirizes types of couples one might encounter in Victorian England, interspersed with whimsical illustrations by Phiz. 6.5" x 4". Full light-brown morocco leather boards, gilt borders on front and rear covers, ornate decoration to spine, 5 raised bands, gilt titles in two dark green leather compartments, T. E. G., marbled endpapers with interesting mottled design, bound by Zaehnsdorf (<1886). Original blue wrappers bound in. Pagination: front wrapper, half-title, frontispiece with onion skin intact, title-page, copyright, contents, [7]-92, 4 pages of ads, rear wrapper. 6 illustrations by "Phiz" (including frontispiece). First edition (Podeschi B87). Condition: Lighting sunning to top inch of front cover, light scratches to rear cover. Texts and illustrations clean and unmarked with minor toning.
