Chapman and Hall, 1839. 1st Edition. Hardcover. A collection of short stories by Dickens. This is the first edition of the collection in one volume, identified as the "New Edition" on the title page. John C. Eckel's bibliography points out two interesting plates in this volume: "One, the 'balloon' etching, used as a vignette title page, is supposed to show the author and artist in the basket of the balloon. The other, 'Public Dinners' is drawn to represent Messrs. Chapman and Hall, as well as Dickens and Cruikshank" (Eckel 1913, p. 18). 8.5" x 5". Rebound in full maroon-brown leather with gilt titles and borders, 5 raised bands, A.E.G., marbled endpapers. Forty illustrations by George Cruikshank. Pagination: half-title, pictorial title page with tissue guard, title page, copyright, advertisement, [vii]-viii contents, [1]-526. Includes first edition points: "186 Strand" address listed under balloon etching, "reeledbefore" on page 526. Near fine. Very minimal rubbing to bands and corners, gilt titles bright and intact, expected toning to outer margins of illustrated plates and offsetting to opposite pages. Small stain to pages 520-526. Fine.
