An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations

London: Printed for T. Cadell and W. Davies in the Strand, 1805. Hardcover. "The Eleventh Edition; with Notes, Supplementary Chapters, and A Life of Dr. Smith, by William Playfair". In his notes and supplementary chapters, Playfair (statistician, economist, and sometimes secret agent) incorporates responses the political and economic upheavals in the time since the first publication of Smith's work, most notably the American Revolution. "Under these circumstances, it is to be presumed, that if Dr. Smith were still alive, he would have found ample ground for additions, and perhaps he might have been inclined to make some alterations." (vi).

All three volumes bear the bookplate of "Margaret Downer, Glenavy, Co. Antrim" on the fixed endpaper and the neat signature of "Thomas Downer" in the upper corner of the title page. The endpaper of the first volume has, in addition, the ornate bookseller's label of Martin Keene, Dublin. Bindings sound, with bumping to the corners, wear to the spines, and patches of damaged surface to the front joint of volume two and the bottom of the rear board of volume one. Evidence of insect predation to the upper margin of the early pages of volume two and three, not affecting the text (see photos provided). xi, [1], 13-515; viii, [1]-567; viii, [1]-590pp, 2 pages publisher's ads. Very Good. Item #2024-Q163
