Mei Lan-Fang: Foremost Actor of China

Shanghai: The Commercial Press, 1929. 1st Edition. Soft cover. A biography of the Chinese actor Mei Lan-Fang, famous for his female roles, translated and adapted from Chinese sources by George Kin Leung on the eve of Mei Lan-Fang's American tour. Lavishly illustrated, with chapters addressing his background, productions, admirers, and offering an overview of the history and practice of Chinese theater. Decorated wraps with plum blossoms. Considerable darkening and wear to wraps, with loss to corners and the upper and lower portions of the spine, leaving the gatherings visible. Slight toning throughout. 132pp. 10.25 x 7.25". Prior owner's bookplate facing the half-title, with a pencil notation of "April 6, 1930". Laid in newspaper clipping with review of a performance from April 6, 1930. The reviewer, Charles Collins, devotes a large portion of his column to praising (and patronizing) Soo Yong, a Chinese-American woman who offered English introductions to each scene. Soo Yong's role in Mei Lan-Fang's American tour helped to launch her career in Hollywood. Good. Item #2023-P337
