London: Martin Secker, 1926. Hardcover. In the original dust jacket, now darkened with age and showing minor wear to the corners and top edge, but otherwise intact, a rare survival from this date. Green cloth binding is clean and bright, with minor bumps to the corners. Bookplates of two previous owners: 'Frederick John Hancock Lloyd' on the paste down, 'James Madison Ross' on the flyleaf. Presumably one of them clipped the review that appeared in the Times Literary Review Supplement for November 25, 1926 and inserted it into the book. As that reviewer notes, 'Mr Machen has no taste for the thin, pale abstractions of to-day. The love of mystery and wonder, he repeats again, is the only sure foundation of art; and he turns to slightly more primitice conditions than those of the present hour to find fit subjects for his love'.
