London: Printed by T. Paine and M. Simmons for J. Rothwell and T. Underhill, 1644. 1st Edition. Hardcover. A contemporary history of the English Civil War, from an enthusiastic supporter. Covering in detail, as the title-page promises, the years 1641 to October of 1643, concluding with the Solemn League and Covenant. "Collected and published, principally for the high honour of our wonder-working God, still most graciously and gloriously carrying-on the great work of a pure Reformation in Church & State; As also for the great encourageme[n]t of all that are zealous for God & Lovers of their Country". Vicar's Chronicle has been professionally restored, leaving it suitable for reading or display. Rebacked, retaining a panel from an early binding reading "Vicar's Chronicle, 1644". A weak section of the title page is reinforced on the verso (see photos). Wear and loss to the corners of the boards. Slight toning to the pages, more pronounced to the index then elsewhere. Edges, now darkened, speckled with red, apparently inexpertly, with slight speckling to edges of the early pages. Possibly due to an error in binding, leaf A3 (the dedication to Isaac Pennington) comes before leaf A2 (the dedication to the members of parliament). All expected pages are present. The lower margin of part 1 (A-M) is cut close to the text, sometimes resulting in loss to the signatures or the catchwords. ESTC R1844. Quarto. [8], 1-434, [22] pp. 7.75 x 6" Very Good.
