Nightmare Alley

New York: Rinehart & Company, 1946. 1st Edition. Hardcover. FIRST EDITION, with circled R on the copyright page, in an unclipped dust jacket designed by A.F. Arnold. From the jacket: 'This is not a nice book, but it is a fine and courageous one. It is charged to the point of explosion with the necessary quality of its own violence. In it are the workings of cruel and ugly chicaneries which few people know exist, but which at some time or another actually touch most adult Americans.' Gresham's novel has twice been adapted to film, once in the film noir classic of 1947 starring Tyrone Powers and more recently in the neo-noir thriller directed by Guillermo del Toro. The unclipped jacket shows signs of wear, with voids on the upper and lower edges of the spine, front joint, and corners, and yellowing of the white flaps. Now in protective plastic. Top edge stained green. Yellowing of pages throughout. [i-viii], [1-2], 3-275 pages. Very Good / Good. Item #2022-M321
