London: Dent, 1893. Aubrey Beardsley. Hardcover. This 1893 edition of Le Morte d'Arthur was richly illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley, launching her career. The text is intended to be a faithful reproduction of Sir Thomas Malory's writing as originally printed by William Caxton in 1485, "spelled in the modern style". It includes Caxton's original 1485 preface, introduction, "rubrysshe" of contents, as well as an introduction by Professor John Rhys of Oxford. In two volumes, limited to 1800 copies; 300 on Dutch hand made paper and 1500 ordinary copies. 9 3/4" x 7 3/4". Tan cloth boards with gilt pictorial front covers and spines, gilt publisher's stamp on rear covers. T.E.G, fore and tail edges are rough cut. Volume 1: Half title, limitation page, frontispiece, title, contents, list of illustrations vii-x, note on the text used ix-x, preface xi-xxxvi, Caxton's preface xxxvii-xl, Caxton's introduction xli-xlii, Caxton's table or rubrysshe of contents xliii-lxiv, 455pp. Volume 2: half title, frontispiece, title, list of illustrations vii, table or rubrysshe lxv-xc, 457-984 pp., glossary 985-990. Vol 1: Upper 3/4" of front cover tanned, minor rubbing to front cover gilt but still bright and attractive, slight wear to corners, considerable tanning to outside edges of rear cover, slight rubbing to publisher's gilt stamp, sunning to spine, slight rubbing to spine gilt, head of spine has 1/2" x 1/8" loss and remainder is slightly worn, tail of spine is intact. Front paste-down endpaper has prior owner's ex-libris and some spotting and discoloration, hinge sound, ffep has gift inscription dated 1907 and offsetting from ex-libris bookplate and accompanying discoloration, offsetting from decorated half title, title page has offsetting from frontispiece, 12 illustrations including frontispiece are present, tissue guards missing. Ribbon present but frayed. Volume 2: Light discoloration to front cover and gilt is bright and intact, head fore corners very slightly bumped and frayed, rear cover slightly tanned around perimeter and publisher's gilt stamp bright and intact, spine tanned uniformly to a light brown and slight wear to head of spine. Prior owner's ex-libris on front paste-down endpaper, discoloration to ffep, front hinge just starting at tail 3", offsetting verso to half title, frontispiece tissue detached but present, 8 illustrations present, several pages uncut towards end of book.
