New York: Dutton, 1946. Hardcover. Williwaw is Vidal's first novel, written when he was only 19 years old and stationed on a U.S. Army ship in the Aleutian islands. Vidal wrote the book in nine months, beginning at Chernofsky Bay on Unalaska Island, and finished it in New York. 9" x 5". Black cloth boards with blue stamped titles to cover and spine. Blue and black pictorial dust jacket with $2.50 price on front flap, author's photograph on rear. Stated first edition, note given regarding the source of word "Williwaw", pages are of uneven sizes, fore-edges roughly cut. Wear to dust jacket primarily at edges, small (?") chip to tail of spine and fore-edge of front, minor scuffing to front, small (½") mark on rear possibly from tape residue. Jacket now protected in Mylar. Binding is tight, head and tail of spine are bumped, corners of boards are bumped, minor wear to corners. Discoloration to front and rear endpapers, remainder of pages are clean, page 23 has a ½" chip missing. G+. Good copy with some shelfwear. Good / Good. Item #2019-J405
